Topsy Turvy Tantrum
As we close in on age 2 (106 days and counting down) Phoebe talks more but she also throws little tantrums more. I used to hate hearing screaming babies. And I still hate to hear Phoebe cry in pain. But these tantrums take on an almost comedic quality. Even Phoebe laughs when she watches them.

  Say Mommy Phoebe
Phoebe's vocabulary is growing. She won't perform on command (well, sometimes she will), but we have captured her saying a few choice words. Most of the time we say something like, "Phoebe, can you say 'school bus' and she will just look at us and say 'yes.'"
Say Mommy, Please..

The gift that brought me to tears:
  Christmas 2002
Dee gave me a gift greater than any other gift that I can think of. She gave me this photograph. Keep in mind that these two people, Phoebe and Dee Anna, are the most important girls in my life. Then add to that the style, grace, composition and elegance of this photo and you have what for me is the most perfect gift. It was the most perfect Christmas. Meanwhile, Dee is suffering from a strained arm and bruised shoulder as she repeatedly pats herself on the back for delivering such an excellent present.

  Daddy's Revelations
My days are longer and my nights unsure. I lay awaiting the call of my master's wishes. There is no pay of gold or cash. I'll never see such material riches. But that's alright. My heart is content. I get paid in hugs and kisses. I am a father.

  Talking & Walking ...
DAY 318 - Check out the bonus Vid Clip Links to see some short clips of Phoebe walking. She can walk with the assistance of her favorite push toy and, of course, she's talking all the time now. I can clearly make out "Da Da" and "Daddy" but the rest of it I leave up to some better interpretor than myself. For all I know, what sounds like babble to me is her recitation of some new profoundly relevant theory of quantum physics. Just so I don't sound like I'm not paying attention I often try to respond to her long soliloquies in a manner which indicates that I am with the program -- "Uh huh, uh huh, sure, but then how do you bond the hydrogen to the carbon monofilaments?"

  Mom's Thoughts
It hardly seems possible that our sweet little girl is a week old already! Just seven days ago, Dr. Carol Greco held up this beautiful little creature and reassured me that she was "Just perfect..." and one look told me that it was so. So much has happened in just seven days.

Our little family is getting to know each other. Phoebe responds with an adoring gaze, gurgles and coos as she associates our voices, so familiar to her after 9 months, with "Mommy" and "Daddy." And after nearly 20 years together, Paul and I are getting to know each other in a totally different way ... seeing Paul cradling our little girl in the delivery room was my first glimpse of the daddy that was also born on November 7.

It's been a week of firsts ... that first cry, those first few breaths - the first time I looked at my daughter's blue eyes and sweet, rosebud lips. The first time we were able to feed her, the first time she fell asleep in my arms. Her first night at home, and every little breath and rustle that brought us out of bed to make sure that she was all right, two nervous parents hoping for the best. Watching my sister fall in love with her as we have, and our cats looking on with curiousity at this little pink creature that has invaded their home. Putting her in her little bouncer seat and watching her reaction to "fun." Her first sponge bath, just this evening, rubbing her soft skin with soap and lotion.

It's also been a week of wonder. We sit together and marvel at her tiny, perfect hands, the little sighs and sounds she makes as she sleeps, the curls beginning to develop along her hairline. Paul joking that he can't believe that the hospital is letting us take her home. The sheer wonder that she really is OURS... that we have become three.

Today is 7 days since the birth of my daughter. We will go to the pediatrician, and Grandma Janet will come from Wheeling with hugs and kisses to meet her new grandaughter. We will celebrate this first big week with a toast - alcohol-free cider - and more pictures. And our brand new life - Phoebe's life - will go on.
